It was in 1968, a year after leaving Manchester University, that Alun experienced the bi polar disorder, a condition where the subject becomes increasingly expansive, euphoric, overactive, sleepless, irritable, grandiose and uninhibited. The sufferer is also unaware of his or her condition, its affect upon others and its increasing potency.
Hypomania most often occurs as a phase of manic depression (bi- polar disorder), a disorder that is extremely debilitating and unpredictable, with as yet no cure but a possibility to remain stable for months at a time, under a regime of controlled drugs.
His autobiography Raptures of a bi- polar Explorer is an account of the traumas and the triumphs he has experienced during his life and uses his talents as an artist photographer and writer to do so. Unfortunately the 100 editions sold out very quickly and there are no plans to reprint it.
Born in Preston, Lancashire in 1945 he was educated at King Edward V11
School, Lytham and read Architecture and Business Studies at Manchester University.
Journalistic and Public Relations experience in London and Hamburg was followed by a Graphic Design Course at Hereford College of Art and success in gaining the Bulmer Prize for Design.
Two major contracts with Ikea, Sweden and The Art Group, London, resulted in the selection of a seascape image for international publication, with sales in excess of 40,000. Run River Records, London and Devon selected his images for 15 album and CD covers.
Alun lived for many years in Brittany where he was a respected photographer running his own gallery and participating in many exhibitions.
